Identity Theft...
25th September 2009
Several IPP members have recently reported that a number of their staff have received letters from HMRC tax credit office entitled ‘Safeguarding your personal details’...
The letter states that HMRC have identified and stopped an attempt to claim Tax Credits using some of the employees’ personal details. Due to the nature of the fraud, HMRC are unable to say how the details were obtained. As this has caused some concern, the IPP contacted HMRC to see what they had to say. Basically personal details are being obtained and bank accounts are being set up in the person’s name. If a National Insurance number is stolen / hijacked with those personal details then someone is able to make a claim for Tax Credits. If this is the case, there is a department within the Tax Credit office who can detect the fraud attempt and block any further attempts. Of course this then means that if the genuine employee then tries to make a claim, they too will be blocked. If this has happened to you or any of your employees then you will need to call 0845 300 3900 to have your NI number unblocked.
