EU Blue Card Scheme...
25th September 2009
Most European members have signed up...
24 of the 27 EU member states have signed up to the new Blue card scheme that will allow highly skilled foreign workers from outside the EU to be employed in the participating states. The UK, Ireland and Denmark have not signed up to the scheme. Tier 1 is the immigration route for highly skilled workers to come to the UK speculatively to look for work.
Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ON) indicate that the number of people from Eastern Europe leaving Britain has more than doubled in the year to September 2008, with 56,000 people from the A8 accession countries (Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia) leaving Britain compared with 25,000 the previous year. In addition, figures from the Home Office show that applications for the Workers Registration Scheme (WRS) that apply to the A8 accession countries have fallen to the lowest level since 2004 - when they joined the EU
